Driverless Cars More Accident Prone When Humans are Involved, Statistics Show.

On Tuesday, September 25, 2012, California Governor Jerry Brown signed into law Senate bill 1298. The new law makes it legal for driverless cars to operate on California roads.

The bill was signed into law at Google’s headquarters.  Google has been using these self-driving vehicles for several years, having driven more than 300,000 miles with no accidents caused by the cars.

The driverless cars, to date, have been involved in two collisions, one of which occurred while a person was manually driving the car.  The other crash occurred while one of the driverless vehicles was stopped at a red light and another driver rear-ended it.

Accordingly, Google claims that the absence of motor vehicle accidents caused by its driverless vehicles indicates that the self-driving vehicles will transform the way people drive and dramatically increase roadway safety.

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers has predicted that driverless cars will account for about for 75% of traffic on US roadways by 2040.
