Hyundai has recently recalled over 880,000 of its Sonatas after uncovering a major transmission defect in the newest models. According to company engineers, there are several recurring problems with certain lines in the transmission that have the potential to cause serious injury to a driver, his or her passengers, and others in the immediate vicinity. Specifically, they have discovered that the transmission shift cable can detach from the shift lever pin. If this happens, the transmission can automatically, and without warning to the driver, switch the car into an alternate gear position. As a result, the vehicle may move in an unintended or unexpected direction, increasing the risk of a car crash.
In addition, a driver that switches their “car” into the park position may be in for quite an unfortunate surprise. The shift cable issue can also fail to properly hold the car in a parked position, which would potentially allow a car to roll away and cause severe damage.
By issuing the recall, Hyundai has promised that it will inspect and, if necessary, repair the connection between the shift cable and shift lever at no cost to current owners. Although no lawsuit has yet been brought, Hyundai has identified 1,171 warranty claims and seven incidents related to the transmission line issue.
