Aaron Deveau, 17 years old at the time, was distracted while texting and driving. As a result, his car drifted across the center line on River Street in Haverville, MA, and struck the vehicle of Donald Bowley, 55, head-on.
Bowley died as a result of car accident-related injuries on March 10, 2012, about one month after the car accident occurred.
A jury is now being selected at the Havervill, MA District Court, overseen by Judge Stephen Abany. Deveau is the first person to be prosecuted for motor vehicle homicide under a new state law that makes it a crime to drive and text at the same time. Deveau has pleaded not guilty.
Texting while driving can be a major distraction, and a serious hazard to a driver and others on the road.
