Congressman Is Defendant In Personal Injury Lawsuit Where Aide Crashed His Car.

According to the National Law Journal/Legal Times, United States Representative and former Republican Vice Presidential candidate, Paul Ryan, has been sued for personal injury damages arising out of a car accident that occurred on February 25, 2014.

The Congressman let one of his top aides use his Chevy Tahoe for employment purposes. The aide, Mr. Ryan’s current chief of staff, Kevin Seifert, subsequently was involved in an auto accident with another vehicle.  He was driving the SUV at the time of the accident. At that time, Mr. Seifert was serving as Ryan’s press secretary. Mr. Seifert rear-ended another car, causing personal injuries to the two passengers.

Santos Perez and Adan Bamaca Cajas were the two men in the other automobile. The plaintiffs are seeking $100,000 for their injuries, $50,000 per person. Their lawsuit was filed in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia in Washington. The lawsuit alleges negligence by both Mr. Ryan and Mr. Seifert. The plaintiffs are being represented by attorney Matthew Tievsky. The defendants have filed a motion to dismiss, arguing that they, acting as the federal government, are immune from such a suit without a waiver of sovereign immunity.

Mr. Ryan is the current Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee.
