A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/03\/18\/nyregion\/child.html\">five year-old boy was struck and killed by a minivan, while the driver was attempting to back up<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/obmhzMb0dz4\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"400\" height=\"280\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This past Sunday, March 16, 2014, at approximately 8:30 p.m.,\u00a0five year-old Rashard Charles and his mother were crossing a street in the Crown Heights neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York. The boy and his mother did not use a crosswalk and attempted to cross the street in the middle of the block. 23 year-old Elizabeth Mayard was backing up her Honda Odyssey minivan and struck the boy. Emergency responders attempted to revive the boy at the scene of the motor vehicle accident, but they were unable to save the\u00a0boy.<\/p>\n<p>Mayard attempted to flee the scene of the accident, but she later returned. In addition to the serious criminal charge of vehicular manslaughter, Mayard is facing the charge of leaving the scene of a fatal car accident and running three red lights.<\/p>\n<p>The New York Police Department is continuing to investigate the car accident. This is the second fatal car accident in new York City this year.
