A shocking scene unfolded this past Tuesday night when a woman drove her minivan, with three children in the passenger seats, straight into the ocean water near Daytona Beach, Florida. Investigators are still trying to understand what possessed the driver to risk the lives of her children in such a reckless way.
This past Tuesday, March 4, 2014, as the sun was almost set, tourists and locals were enjoying a pleasant stroll along the shoreline near the famed Daytona Beach in Florida. This idyllic scene was shattered by a speeding minivan, which first roared onto the sand from the nearby road and then made a beeline for the water. Stunned beachgoers watched as the minivan splashed into the waves of the Atlantic Ocean.
Frantic emergency calls for lifeguards summoned a rapid response from the Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue team. Lifeguards dove into the water and pulled three children, aged 10, 9 and 3, as well as the delirious woman driver, from the sinking minivan. The lifeguards brought the victims to the shoreline, where a waiting ambulance drove them to the emergency room of a nearby hospital. The victims of this strange car accident do not appear to have sustained any serious personal injuries and are expected to completely recover soon.
The Ocean Rescue team, assisted by local police, is investigating what possessed the woman to drive into the water, with her three children in the back of the car.
