Berton Stepens, 54, of Bountiful, Utah was killed in a highway car accident at around 5:30 p.m. on May 20th, when he crashed his car into two other motor vehicles.
Stephens was driving northbound on Interstate 215 when his car rammed into another vehicle just before the Legacy Highway split. The second car was being driven by Nathan Monson, 33, of Woods Cross. After colliding with Monson, Stephens’s car continued moving, sideswiping the highway barrier and crossing the highway median. Stephens’s car then continued up an embankment, cut across the westbound Interstate 215 lanes and proceeded into the westbound Interstate 215 on-ramp from Redwood Road.
A sport utility vehicle being driven by Juan Garcia, 46, of West Valley City, Utah was entering the highway when Stephens’s car struck his vehicle. Garcia’s SUV was forced off the road, rolled down an embankment, hit a fence, and came to rest on a nearby bike path. Garcia was rushed to Salt Lake City hospital with severe personal injuries.
It is currently unknown whether Garcia was wearing a seat-belt when the motor vehicle accident took place. Monson suffered no personal injuries in the car crash. Stephens was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the auto crash, while speculating that a medical condition may be to blame for Stephens’s negligent actions while driving.
