Secret Service Agents Seriously Injured in New Hampshire Car Crash.

Motor vehicles are not just a convenience, but often a necessity for modern life.  While the speed and convenience of modern vehicles make travel much easier, they also put us in harm’s way.  Even a mild car collision can result in serious injury or even death.  While the average driver is sometimes at risk, recent events prove that even the most trained safety experts are also susceptible to being injured by another driver.

Recently, four secret service agents were traveling with Hillary Clinton’s campaign while she was in New Hampshire. The agents were traveling down Route 16 when a car traveling in the opposite direction crossed the double yellow divide and struck their vehicle head on.  The other driver, Bruce Danforth, was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision and the agents were rushed to the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.  Three of the agents are expected to make a full recovery, but the youngest agent, thirty-year-old Garrett Fitzgerald, suffered a traumatic spine injury.

While he is in stable condition, Fitzgerald has lost all feeling from his chest down.  Fitzgerald has maintained an optimistic tone, however, and says that his goal is to recover as much as possible and return to work as soon as possible.  But that may not be possible.  While extensive physical therapy and treatment may regain some of his movement and feeling, it is unlikely that Fitzgerald will be able to work again as a Secret Service Agent, a position he dedicated his life to obtaining.  According to the Boston Herald, Fitzgerald was supposed to marry his fiancé Joan Lyall in March, but the couple says they are focusing on his recovery for the time being and will move the date if need be.  In an instant, a promising young man’s life was completely turned upside down, a potential risk that every reckless driver makes others on the road face every day.
