An Orem, Utah man died recently after the vehicle he was driving crashed into a flatbed truck during a seven-car crash on Interstate 15 northbound. The Utah Highway Patrol identified the man who died as Dylan Thornton, 35 years-old. Mr. Thornton was a social studies teacher at the Vista Heights Middle School in Saratoga Springs, Utah. One trooper was in the area, conducting a traffic stop, when the accident occurred and witnessed the crash. That officer, Trooper Royce, said this serious accident began as two separate two-car crashes, which led to even more crashes.

The last sequence of events ended with Mr. Thornton’s Mitsubushi crashing into the flatbed truck. It was noted in Trooper Royces’ report that it appeared as if Mr. Thornton’s vehicle attempted to take evasive maneuvers. But in the end, his vehicle slid underneath the flatbed truck. Mr. Thornton was pronounced dead at the scene, and a few other people suffered minor injuries. It is believed that the original crashes were caused by drivers being distracted from the trooper’s traffic stop, leading to them tailgating each other and being unable to stop in time.
