More than fifty adults and children were inside the KinderCare Learning Center at North Goldenrod Road and University Boulevard in Orange County Wednesday afternoon when a convertible came crashing through the facility. According to police, a silver Dodge Durango had forced the convertible off the road, causing the fatal accident.
The deadly accident occurred just after 3:00 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. One 3-year-old girl became pinned by the car as it crashed through the building. A total of thirteen patients were transported to four local hospitals, and twelve of those patients were children. The children ranged in ages and suffered injuries from minor to critical. Around 7:00 p.m. Wednesday evening, one of the children, aged 4, died from her injuries. One other child was listed in critical condition, three more in serious condition and one in fair condition.
More than two hours after the crash, police located the SUV believed to have caused the accident. The man had fled the rental car after dropped it off in a neighborhood that neither recognized him or the vehicle. Police believe the man responsible is 28-year-old Robert Alex Corchado. Police are still looking for the suspect and remind civilians not to approach him, but rather to call authorities immediately.
