Rachel Morris, a gold medal-winning hand-cyclist in the 2008 Beijing Paralympics, was struck by a car last week and now faces a race to recover in time for the Paralympic time trials.
The 33 year-old Olympian was training near her home with her hand-cycle in a time trial when a car struck her. Morris suffered whiplash injuries to her back and serious personal injuries to her shoulder. Her bike was also destroyed in the car accident.
Morris suffers from reflex sympathetic dystrophy, which seriously impacts her ability to recover from injuries. The condition causes extreme pain and related sensory abnormalities. As a result, when Morris suffers an injury, her body reacts in a damaging way, compromising her recovery.
