Many residents in Vermont are mourning the five teenagers that passed away from a car that was driving in the wrong direction. The victims were identified as: Eli Brookens, 16, of Waterbury; Mary Harris and Cyrus Zschau, both 16, of Moretown; and Lim Hale and Janie Cozzi, both 15, from Fayston.

A member of the community described their mourning: “Vermont is a community, and today we share the sadness and loss of the families and friends of these teens.” All except one of the teens went to school at Harwood Union, a school in Duxbury. The reckless driver that caused the accident was recognized as Steven Bourgoin, 36, from Williston. Authorities have described Steven as a troubled person with a criminal history of driving under the influence and domestic violence. The car accident happened when Steven was driving on the wrong side of the road and hit the teenager’s Volkswagen. The car then began catching on fire when the police arrived. An officer then unsuccessfully tried to help the teens get out of the vehicle. In the meantime, Steven stole the police vehicle. However, Steven didn’t get very far, as he crashed into other vehicles, which caused him to fly out of the police vehicle. Luckily, these Vermont small-knit communities are helping the families of the victims and coming together for support.
