The students of Portland High School in Portland, Maine attended a simulated drunk driving car accident held in front of the school building this past Wednesday, April 30, 2014.
While many high school students get at least some guidance and instruction, perhaps with a video demonstration, about drunk and distracted driving, Portland High School and the organization Students Against Destructive Decisions take it one step further with a live demonstration of a car accident. It begins with a drunk individual leaving a party and getting behind the wheel. The drunk driver smashes his car into another vehicle resulting in a car accident with one fatality and multiple injuries.
Seven students act out the roles of the drunk driver, the injured and the killed. Portland police and firefighters respond to the staged drunk driving accident as they would to any actual car accident. The police perform a field sobriety test on the driver and use the Jaws of Life to extract the injured students from the totaled motor vehicles. An ambulance arrives to take the injured to a hospital.
Many students watching the demonstration had a visibly emotional reaction to the proceedings. One student stated that it is “crazy” to think of a classmate hurt in such a car accident. Hopefully, such demonstrations will prompt young adults to think twice before driving drunk or otherwise distracted.
