Sixteen-year-old Yuki Hirayama and his parents were killed in a car accident caused by a speeding motorist attempting to elude police apprehension. His 9-year-old sister, Rinka, survived the tragic crash.
The family of four was driving towards the Grand Canyon Friday afternoon while enjoying the children’s spring break vacation. The accident occurred on U.S. Route 160 in Arizona after a pickup truck struck the family’s van. The driver of the pickup, who has not yet been identified, was driving opposite the van and being chased by the Navajo Police Department. During the chase, the truck crossed the centerline, hitting the family’s van head-on. The pickup truck immediately burst into flames, killing both occupants.
The Hirayamas had just moved to Vernon Hills from Holland and were still adjusting to the area. The 9-year-old girl was the only survivor of the tragic crash.
