California Governor Jerry Brown is expected to sign ground-breaking legislation this week that would open the door to the state of California having driverless cars.
Sources within Governor Brown’s office intimated that Brown would be signing the bill on Tuesday at the Google headquarters in Mountain View, CA. Google has been one of the leaders in driverless car technology and has been aggressively lobbying for the bill.
Driverless cars, also known as autonomous vehicles, use a system of computers, GPS and sensors to operate the motor vehicle without the need for a driver. Google has developed such cars and has reportedly logged over 300,000 miles with these technological motor vehicle breakthroughs on numerous California roads.
Those in support of the bill have pointed to the potential for increased safety and fewer car accidents as a result of taking the human error element out of play.
