High School Student Dies From Injuries Sustained In Motor Vehicle Accident.

Anytime someone gets behind the wheel of a car — no matter how long they’ve been driving – should abide by certain safety measures to ensure that everyone on the road is safe. Some of these safety measures, such as speed limits, seat belt rules and using a turn signal, are required by law. Others, while not required by law, such as listening to music at a reasonable volume, not speaking on your cell phone and not eating while driving, are all good ways to protect you and every other driver on the road. Any time these safety measures are not followed, the risk of being involved in an accident increase. If you are involved in an accident, due to the negligence of another party, you may be entitled to just and fair compensation for your pain and suffering and other damages.

Less than a week after Thanksgiving, the Champaign County Coroner, Duane Northrup, identified Tori Lanter, 17 years-old, as the driver of a silver 2005 Scion that rolled over and crashed on Interstate 72 near Rising Road in Champaign, Illinois. Mr. Northrup said Ms. Lanter had been taken to the Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, Illinois, where she was pronounced dead at 5:55 p.m. Ms. Lanter was a senior at Monticello High School. The passenger in her vehicle, Isiah W. Hancock, 20 years-old, of Allerton, Illinois, was seriously injured and transported to an area hospital.

According to state police, Ms. Lanter was driving east on I-72 when her car left the highway and hit the guardrail at the Rising Road overpass just after 3:30 p.m. Her car then crossed the center median and westbound lanes, smashed into the guardrail on the north shoulder of westbound I-72, then rolled over multiple times, ejecting the passenger and partially ejecting Ms. Lanter.

An Orem, Utah man died recently after the vehicle he was driving crashed into a flatbed truck during a seven-car crash on Interstate 15 northbound. The Utah Highway Patrol identified the man who died as Dylan Thornton, 35 years-old. Mr. Thornton was a social studies teacher at the Vista Heights Middle School in Saratoga Springs, Utah. One trooper was in the area, conducting a traffic stop, when the accident occurred and witnessed the crash. That officer, Trooper Royce, said this serious accident began as two separate two-car crashes, which led to even more crashes.

The last sequence of events ended with Mr. Thornton’s Mitsubushi crashing into the flatbed truck. It was noted in Trooper Royces’ report that it appeared as if Mr. Thornton’s vehicle attempted to take evasive maneuvers. But in the end, his vehicle slid underneath the flatbed truck. Mr. Thornton was pronounced dead at the scene, and a few other people suffered minor injuries. It is believed that the original crashes were caused by drivers being distracted from the trooper’s traffic stop, leading to them tailgating each other and being unable to stop in time.

A New Jersey woman has been awarded $1.75 million by a Somerset County jury after having to have back surgery as the result of two car accidents between 2011 and 2013. Michele Wender, 48 years-old, was awarded a total of $2.18 million, which included the $1.75 million along with interest, legal fees and other expenses. Ms. Wender was injured in the first car accident in 2011 when her vehicle was struck from behind by Anthony Burns in an accident in Franklin, New Jersey. She was then involved in a second car accident in the town of Bedminster, New Jersey in 2013, when she was struck from behind again, this time by Michelle Bartolett.

Ms. Wender ended up needing to have back surgery in 2016 to correct the issues created by these auto accidents. Both Mr. Burns and Ms. Bartolett were defendants in a three-day trial that took place this past June before Judge Edward Coleman of the New Jersey Superior Court. A confidential settlement from Mr. Burns was accepted after opening arguments, while Ms. Wender rejected several settlement offers from Ms. Bartolett’s insurance company.
