Ice snow and rain seem to be the leading factor in a 35-car pileup that occurred Sunday night on the Bronx River Parkway in New York City. Hundreds of cars were damaged in the massive chain-reaction collision, leaving people stranded on the frozen highway for hours.
Although the crash involved nearly 100 vehicles, only 35 people were treated for their injuries. The majority of collisions were relatively minor, and more the result of even slow moving cars having an inability to brake in time on the icy roadways.
New York is not the only state experiencing massive pileup collisions. A similar accident occurred in Philadelphia last week leaving motorists stranded for seven hours. In another pileup in Texas, travelers were trapped in their cars for up to twenty-six hours.
